Trial ist die hohe Kunst das Motorrad in den Hindernisparcours, sogenannte Sektion, innerhalb einer gewissen Höchstfahrzeit möglichst fehlerfrei zu bewältigen. Besonders wenn man bedenkt, dass manche dieser Sektionen selbst eine Bergziege zum Umdrehen zwingen könnten. Meist scheint selbst zu Fuß die Bewältigung nahezu unmöglich. Beim Trialfahren kommt es lediglich darauf an, die Sektionen ohne gröberes Punktesammeln zu schaffen. Strafpunkte gibt es etwa für das Abstützen mit dem Fuß, für Stürze, für das Überfahren von Streckenbegrenzungen und ähnlichem. Trial ist ein Sport, in dem alleine der Fahrer entscheidend ist. Wichtig ist daher ein gutes Balancegefühl, absolute Fahrzeugbeherrschung, Schnellkraft, Ausdauer und Konzentrationsfähigkeit. Das Material, also das Motorrad, ist eher Nebensache – man kann durchaus mit einer serienmäßigen Trialmaschine um die Meisterschaft mitfahren. Auch die Verletzungsgefahr ist im Vergleich zu anderen Sportarten gering. Auch das Geschlecht des Fahrers spielt keine Rolle. Trial ist offiziell kein Motorsport, da es nicht auf die Erzielung von Höchstgeschwindigkeiten ankommt!
